Four-thirty Friday afternoon, seventy degrees–perfect weather for a waterfront walk. A breeze lifts off Puget Sound. I pass other walkers, but the boardwalk is far from crowded. The chairs for outdoor eating at Anthony’s Beach Cafe are stacked, the sandbox empty. We’ve been spoiled with a string of sunny days.
I pass planters filled with roses, ornamental grass.
Marina Beach Park is at the south end of my walk. I circle around where people are picnicking and throwing balls, kids climbing monkey bars and digging in the sand. Not everyone stayed home today.
The gulls are always out. They have no home.
Or, depending on how you look at it, the whole world belongs to them.
Passing the marina, I choose the sailboats’ reflections over the real thing. The resulting photo shows a cloudy sky with a promising blue hole—the sun almost unnoticed at the bottom right, the lines of the masts, softened and bent. In reality, this is a picture of water. Everything else is merely light and shadow in a watery mirror.
A nicely shaped piece of driftwood along the way.
A lifelike bronze seal sculpture.
Near Brackett’s Landing, the park at the north end of my walk, the ferry is loading. I cross the street, make a loop around the park, and head back to my car. Bringing a camera has stretched my usual forty minute walk to an hour. I hope you enjoyed it.
I certainly enjoyed this walk with you. You’re lucky to live near such beauty.
How well I remember those lovely end-of-August afternoons walking along the waterfront. Though I miss those days, Nicki, you captured the essence of just such an afternoon for me. Thanks!
Thank you, Gretchen. Have a wonderful autumn in Tennessee.
I thoroughly enjoyed your walk, NIcki! Edmonds is beautiful even on a cloudy day!
True. It’s good to appreciate all kinds of weather and the more subtle beauty of a cloudy day. But nothing beats the bright colors of a sunny day.
Thanks for sharing your walk, Nicki ~ I really loved seeing the gardens, grasses, and gulls.
Thanks for stopping by, Nancy.
The end of August hit us here in Finland with a lot of grey days with a lot of rain. Today was the first time in two weeks for one hour sunshine. The weather basically changed within one day, from extreme sunshine for a month to a week of thunderstorms and rain to the daily constant drizzle.
I am looking forward to spring time to enjoy some little sun again as the following six months will be just dark and depressing
I think you’re even farther north than we are. I love the long days of summer when it’s almost bedtime by the time the sun goes down. I’m not looking forward to the short days of winter.
What a great parade of pictures! I would think the City of Edmonds would be interested in this series – it really shows the waterfront off. So pretty! Thanks!
Sheila
I still haven’t ordered the instructions for my camera, so I take easy shots. Anyway, it’s fun to take photos and put them on my blog rather than pasting them in a book the way I used to do.
The driftwood is perhaps a Chinese Dragon! Great pictures–your writing put me right there.
I hadn’t thought of a Chinese dragon, Veda. Another possibility: a goldfish with lacy fins.
it’s always a treat to read your post’s.
Thank you “Donna.” It’s fun to share something as simple as an afternoon walk. Without this blog, I wouldn’t have anyone to share these rather ordinary photos with. In fact, I would have left my camera at home.
